Revista Vislun: A Brazilian tenor with an international career

by Alex Varela

“Filmmaker Yves Goulart, wrote the screenplay, directed and produced an excellent documentary about the Brazilian tenor Aldo Baldin (1945-1994) whose memory was falling into oblivion. But why did Yves select its preservation?”

“Firstly, because the filmmaker and the tenor were born in the same town, Urussanga, of Italian colonization, located in Santa Catarina, Brazil. But he didn’t even know Aldo existed.”

“Secondly, because Yves was gifted by a friend with the album ‘Serenatas, Bachianas & Canções’, by Heitor Villa-Lobos, recorded by Aldo Baldin. The album cover had a photo of the main church of Urussanga. And this fact troubled the filmmaker to the point of starting research on the tenor.”

“(…) He wanted to understand why Aldo is not remembered in our country but respected and admired by lovers of lyrical singing and concert music around the world.”

“The documentary is dense, deep, biographical, well scripted and directed. It is the recovery of the trajectory of a Brazilian tenor whose career was built on an international level. Acting on the world stage enabled Aldo to build and consolidate his profile as a lyrical singer across four continents.”

“The musical direction is by Irene Flesch Baldin, as already mentioned, Aldo’s widow, who presented us with a soundtrack marked by a rigorous selection of melodious songs written by great lyrical composers. A real treat!”
